Catalina Freedive Training Camps & Spearfishing Workshops

Explore the kelp forests of Catalina Island while earning your PADI Freediver, Advanced Freediver, or Master Freediver Certification in a 3-day immersive training camp designed for all experience levels. Whether it’s your first time freediving or you’re working toward Advanced or Master Freediver goals, we train together, support one another, and grow as a team.

Which certification are you working towards?

There is no experience necessary, and all the equipment needed is included!

Catalina Island Mermaids has partnered with Odyssey Freediving to offer this class in Avalon.

FREEDIVE TRAINING CAMP

Each morning includes freedive theory, physiology, and safety systems, followed by afternoon confined water training, dynamic apnea, and static breath-hold practice.

On Day 2, we dive at Casino Point Dive Park for open water depth training, followed by an exploration swim through the kelp forest where you’ll get photos and videos of your progress—shared in a private online gallery.

On Day 3, you’ll join an optional spearfishing workshop, where you’ll receive hands-on training from expert freediver and spearfishing guide Brandon Burke. Equipment is provided, but you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have it.

FAQ’s

How cold is the water? In Catalina the water can range from a brisk 55 degrees to 75 degrees in the summer and fall months. Please come prepared with warm clothing to wear after getting out of the water. After exiting you will want to wrap up in towels and warm clothes that you don’t mind getting wet, on the way back to the rental.

What meals are included? We include a light lunch on training days with snacks and beverages throughout the weekend. All other meals are on your own.

What if I have dietary restrictions? That’s totally fine! Please let us know ahead of your class so we can bring substitutes for you.

How will I get around while I’m on the island? In Avalon, everywhere we go will be walking distance, so there is no need to coordinate transportation on the island, but Taxi’s are available.
